Flatirons Locksmiths: How (Not) To Remove A Broken Key From Your Ignition In Colorado

Broken Ignition KeyMaybe it was out of frustration. Perhaps you simply didn’t know your own strength. Or you could even blame it on the flimsy key. Whatever the cause, your key is broken inside the ignition. Unfortunately, as human beings, we tend to be unable to leave well enough alone. Thankfully, countless others have been in this situation before you, and provide you with the unique experience of what not to do.

Magnets. Trust us on this one, don’t even bother. The idea is certainly sound in theory, however, the results will be similar to attempting to use a remote control without batteries. Nothing.

Then there are those who’ve used the MacGyver approach and pulled out the Super Glue. We can only hope that these same folks didn’t also try to diffuse a bomb with a toothpick and some dental floss. Both would only result in disaster. Instead of connecting the part of the key in your hand to the part in the ignition, you’ll only fill your ignition with glue.

If you’ve ever tried to put a round peg into a square hole then you know why using a screwdriver won’t work either. It may, perhaps, be a great way to take out your frustration, but in the end you’ll only wind up damaging the ignition.

If you’re fortunate enough to have had the key break above the level of the lock, then pliers may work. Otherwise, even with needle-nose pliers, there won’t be enough room in the ignition slot to retrieve the key.
